Flood defences,Venice. Worker taking notes during work to raise part of the city of Venice,Italy. This will protect against extreme floods, due to winds and tides, that are predicted to worsen because of global warming. The construction work is carefully planned to avoid altering the historic tourist attractions. This view looks along the water's edge towards the Doge's Palace (built 1309-1424,upper right). Two statues flank the entrance to the famous Piazza San Marco, which regularly floods with half a metre of water. This work is part of the MOSE flood defence project, which will also use moveable barriers at the sea inlets to Venice's lagoon. Photographed in 2003 | |
