MOSE flood barrier construction,Venice. The MOSE project is intended to protect the city of Venice,Italy, from extreme floods. This is part of the initial construction, involving the building of a stone reef across each of the three inlets to the lagoon surrounding the island of Venice. The reefs will reduce the volume and speed of the incoming water. Extreme flooding, due mainly to winds and tides,is predicted to worsen because of global warming. The main part of the MOSE project is the construction of large moveable flaps anchored to the seabed, which will rise to block the inlets when water levels rise. These barriers will be built from 2006 to 2011. Photographed in 2003 | |
