Hurricane. Palm tree blowing in a hurricane. Hurricanes are huge cyclonic storm systems of high winds blowing around a central eye. Most hurricanes form in the doldrums, areas of ocean around the equator which are generally calm. A low pressure region forms as moist air is forced upwards, and this becomes the eye of the storm. Hurricanes occur mainly in the late summer months, when conditions for formation are ideal. This photograph of Hurricane Bonnie was taken at Wilmington Beach,North Carolina on 26 August,1998,the day the hurricane made landfall. Bonnie was a category 3 hurricane, which has wind speeds of between 170 and 200 kilometres per hour | |
