Sun dog. Rainbow-coloured sun dog in a partly cloudy sky. This optical atmospheric effect, also called a parhelion,is caused by the refraction,or bending,of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere. It usually causes bright areas on either side of the sun, sometimes referred to as mock suns. Here, the sunlight has been split into the component colours of the spectrum,in the same way that a rainbow forms. Photographed in Colorado,USA | |
