Mirage. Mirage of distant islands formed over water. A mirage may be seen when the layer of air closest to the ground is warmer than the air immediately above it. Typically such a layer is above a sunlit road or sandy area. This causes an unusual refractive effect which produces an inverted image of a distant object as well as a direct view of the object.
