Photograph of the sun and mock sun,Antarctica. Late in the Antarctic winter the mock sun can be seen shining strongly above the surface of the sea ice. It is formed by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in the air. The mock sun is in fact an arc of light tangent to a halo around the sun,and is technically known as a lower tangent arc. Part of the halo can be seen towards the bottom of the picture | |
