Lenticular clouds. Lenticular cloud over a snow- covered mountain. High winds have drawn the cloud out towards the left. These lens-shaped cloud formations often occur in stacks. They are produced when moist air ascends over a mountain range: as the stream of air passes over the ground it may form a standing wave (called a lee wave). The air rising to the crest of this wave may be cooled sufficiently to condense, forming lenticular clouds. Photographed over Mount Sanford,Alaska,USA,in 1989 | |
