Aurora. Green aurora borealis (northern lights) display over a field of ice with a setting Moon. Aurorae are caused by charged particles from the Sun stimulating gas molecules in the Earth's atmosphere to emit light. They are more common around the poles as the Earth's magnetic field directs the charged particles there. They occur at an altitude of around 100 kilometres.
