| Aurora borealis. Coloured ultraviolet (UV) light image showing the distribution of the aurora borealis,or 'northern lights'. UV intensity is colour coded from purple (lowest) through blue,green and yellow to red (highest). This image is remarkable in that it records auroral activity both in the night and day hemispheres; visible light images would be drowned out by reflected sunlight. The main aurora (lower red area) is in the daylight hemisphere,whilst a sub-storm (upper red area) is in night.
