Arctic ozone distribution. Coloured satellite image of average total column ozone levels (amount of ozone in a column of air between the Earth's surface and space) over the Arctic during March 2005. The colours represent ozone concentration in Dobson units. The black area is where no data was obtained due to the Arctic night. Ozone is a gas in the Earth's atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Wind and temperature conditions can cause enhanced rates of ozone depletion over the Arctic during the winter and spring. Image taken using the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA's Aura satellite.
