Tribesman from Northern India milking a dromedary camel while juvenile stimulates milk production by nuzzling. Juvenile camels have been identified as a key source and reservoir of the middle east respiratory syndrome MERS-CoV. In a Middle East study (2015) more than 90% of animals in had been infected by two years old and shed active viruses more than adults. Adults may also spread disease through milk and urine. International trade in camels exists, and collecting and drinking unpasteurised camel milk is common practise. It may ultimately contribute to epidemic spread of the disease beyond Africa and the Arabian Peninsula | |
