Heliotype illustration of expressions from 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals' by Charles Darwin,1872. This was one of the first books to be illustrated with photographs – with seven heliotype plates. The publisher John Murray warned that photographs "would poke a terrible hole in the profits" and so the heliotype was chosen as a photomechanical process that could reproduce photographs direct on the page (without mounting actual photographs). He used the photographs of others and here Oscar Rejlander (1813-1875) has taken photographs of himself (2,3,4) in exagerrated emotional poses (indignant, resigned, etc) | |
