1821 (1808) Thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus and Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) Possum (Pseudocheirus spp.) Contemporary hand colouring. Plate from F.J. Beruch "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" 1821. Weimar publishers,Germany. The first coloured representation of the thylacine and many of the other australian marsupial 'suprises'. Thylacinus cynocephalus,Commonly known as the Tasmanian tiger or the Tasmanian wolf was found in Australia and Papua New Guinea, but by the 19th Century was only seen on Tasmania. The thylacine went extinct in the early part of the 20th century, and though many have hoped a relic population would be discovered it appears hope has dwindled. The Tasmanian Devil now faces extinction due to disease | |
