From Francois Valentijn "Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien" published in 1724-6. The animal strongly resembles a thylacine, though its naming and official description by Harris was 75 years later. Valentyn was historian of the Dutch East India Company given access to the secret archives of earlier Dutch voyages (amongst them Abel Tasman and the naturalist Rumphius). This image is in a section on Ambon (which is where Tasman and many other Dutch voyages south began, and where collected specimens ended). Generally the drawings in Valentyn's book are accurate and the animals easy to identify - but these animals, given the names Toepe (F) and Lauw (E),are an exception. Paul D. Stewart proposes the possibility that a Thylacine and a Tasmanian Devil were somehow sketched from life by an earlier Ambon Dutch Voyager to Van Diemen's Land,an image that was copied for this later Ambon wildlife account | |
