Lithograph of a dinosaur track from 'Ichnology of New England. A Report on the Sandstone of the Connecticut Valley, especially its Fossil Footmarks'. Boston: William White,1858. The book describes a collection of fossil footmarks assembled between 1836 and 1865 by the geologist Edward Hitchcock (1793–1864). He was state geologist of Massachusetts, and President of Amherst College. Made chiefly from the fossils of the Connecticut River Valley. It is the world's largest collection of dinosaur tracks, but Hitchcock believed he was finding the tracks of giant birds (this almost photographic lithograph illustration track shows why). In the year this book was published Joseph Leidy discovered the first evidence of bipedal dinosaurs, and the tracks were re-assessed | |
