Theodor De Bry's "The True Picture of a Women Picte," with later hand colouring, from Thomas Hariot's 1588 book 'A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia'. De Bry included these images "to show how that the inhabitants of the Great Bretannie have been in times past as savage as those of Virginia." The Picts were tribal people from eastern and northern Scotland who were culturally related to the celts. They existed from about 500BC to 700AD. "Pict" means "painted",probably referring to their custom of either tattooing or painting their bodies | |
