Waste quarry slate. Close-up of discarded waste slate at a quarry. Slate is a low-grade metamorphic rock that is formed by shale heated at a few hundred degrees. It has very strong cleavage but just 10 percent of the mined stone is of sufficient quality. The orange colour is formed by oxidised iron sulphides, which can damage thin slates.
