William Osler during the First World War. Canadian physician William Osler (1849-1919) in uniform as head physician during World War I at the Canadian war hospital at Cliveden,Buckinghamshire,UK. Osler was the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore,USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University,UK. Considered the father of modern medicine,he founded the practice of student residency in hospitals. Osler carried out a wide range of activities relating to medical services in the war. His son Revere died on 30 August 1917 serving at Ypres. Photographed on 20 March 1916 | |
