Hogarth on venereal disease. Fifth scene from 'A Harlot's Progress',a series of six engravings from 1732 by English artist William Hogarth (1697-1764),telling the story of a young woman who becomes a prostitute and dies from venereal (sexually transmitted) disease. She is seated in a chair (right) dying from syphilis. Her son is playing by the fire, and her maid tends her. Two doctors argue: Richard Rock advocating bleeding at far left; Jean Misaubin suggesting cupping at centre left. A woman steals her possessions (lower left). Here,Hogarth's work has inspired and is being used to illustrate John Durant Breval (Joseph Gay)'s poem 'The Lure of Venus' (1733) | |
