Darkling beetle. This species of Darkling beetle (family Tenebrionidae) has two prominent humps over the top of the prothorax (section in between the head and the metathorax or wing case). The humps closely resemble the large bulging eyes of a similar looking Tiger beetle (Tricondyla sp.) which is known to be an aggressive predator. The phenomenon where a harmless species evolves to mimic the appearance of a harmful species is known as Batesian mimicry. Photographed in Singapore | |
