Frederick Courteney Selous (1851-1917),British explorer,soldier and hunter. Selous explored Africa and hunted animals there from 1872 onwards. He worked for the British South Africa Company from 1890. In 1892 he was awarded the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in recognition of his exploration and surveys. He fought in the First World War at the age of 64,fighting in East Africa for the British Army. He was killed by a German sniper on 4 January 1917 during an engagement on the banks of the Rufiji River (then German East Africa,now Tanzania).
