Mini-satellites testing onboard the ISS. Astronaut photograph of Expedition 40 flight engineers European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst (born 1976,left) and NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman (born 1975) conducting a testing session with a pair of free-flying mini-satellites known as Synchronized Position Hold Engage Reorient Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Surrounding the two SPHERES is ring-shaped hardware known as the Resonant Inductive Near-field Generation System (RINGS). SPHERES-RINGS seeks to demonstrate wireless power transfer between satellites at a distance for enhanced operations. Photographed in the ISS's Kibo laboratory,on 10th July 2014 | |
