Amelia Earhart (1897-1937),US aviation pioneer,in the Hammond Model Y prototype (later Stearman-Hammond Y-1) used in the 1934 Bureau of Air Commerce safe airplane competition. Earhart set numerous aviation records,including flying solo across the Atlantic in a record 13 hours and 30 minutes (1932). In 1937,Earhart attempted to become the first woman to fly around the world. Her Electra plane,with navigator Fred Noonan also on board,disappeared on 2 July 1937 whilst flying over the Pacific Ocean from New Guinea to Howland Island.
