Moss spore capsules. Macrophotograph of the stalked capsules (spore cases) of a club moss (Funaria hygrometrica). The capsules are borne on spiralling stalks which curl up in dry conditions and unwind when they are damp. Mosses reproduce by means of spores at certain stages of the life cycle. Spores are dispersed from each capsule, and are flung away from the plant. Club mosses are common on recently-burned areas and on alkali soils.
