Queen honeybee. Macrophotograph of a honeybee queen (Apis mellifera). Each colony of honeybees has one egg-laying female, the queen. She produces all of the eggs for the colony, which are cared for by attendant worker bees. Whether the female larvae develop into infertile workers or new queens depends on the type of food they receive. In summer, new queens are produced that either replace the old queen,or fly off to form their own colony.
