Lobes of Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko as seen from the orbiting spacecraft Rosetta. 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is around 3.5 by 4 kilometres, consisting of two lobes connected by a 'neck' region. At left are the Apis and Atum regions of the comet's larger lobe. The smaller lobe is at right. The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was launched in March 2004 and entered orbit around the comet on 6 August 2014. It carried instruments and a lander to map and study the comet's surface and core. Image obtained on 5 September 2014,at a distance of around 40 kilometres.
