Azurite is a secondary mineral,a hydrated copper carbonate mineral, chemical formula (Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2. It occurs both in crystalline form (monocline) and as an amorphous precipitate,as seen in this sample. Its name refers to its color,a deep blue azure-blue.The green substrate is Chrysocolla,a hydrous copper silicate mineral, most often formed in the oxidation zones of copper-rich ore deposits. It is an important surface indicator pinpointing the presence of copper. The co-precipitation of the two copper bearing minerals Chrysocolla and Azuriteis not uncommon. Actual width of the specimen shown here is 16 cm | |
