Oral specimen collection device. Close-up of a woman opening the packaging for an oral specimen collection device. This will be used to collect a sample of oral fluid. The collecting pad is held between the lower cheek and gum for two to five minutes to absorb oral fluid. This fluid has a different composition to saliva. The pad is then placed in the collection vial, which contains preservatives that stabilize the sample for up to 21 days. The sample is then transported to a laboratory for testing. Typical tests include screening for tobacco use and cocaine abuse. For a sequence showing the use of this device to take a sample, see images C025/4850 to C025/4853 | |
