Mine safety research site visitors. Visitors in the 1930s at an underground explosion gallery at the Safety in Mines Research Board (SMRB) research site in Buxton,Derbyshire,UK. The SMRB was a forerunner of what is today the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). Health and safety research in the UK started with investigations in the early 20th century into safety in mines. Experiments were carried out at underground galleries such as these that determined that coal dust was explosive under certain circumstances. The Buxton site opened in 1927 and as well as being used for research was used for demonstrations and training for thousands of miners and other visitors | |
