ERS (European remote sensing satellite) was the European Space Agency's (ESA) first Earth-observing satellite program using a polar orbit. ERS-1 carried was launched on 17th July 1991 and operated until 10th March 2000. Envisat was an Earth-observing satellite designed to service the continuity of ERS missions,providing additional observational parameters to improve environmental studies. It was launched on 1st March 2002 and became inoperational on 8th April 2012. It is still in orbit
