US pathologist Simon Flexner (1863-1946) and French surgeon Alexis Carrel (1873-1944) in a laboratory. Flexner was the first director (1901-1935) of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation. He worked on experimental epidemiology and venoms,poliomyelitis,serum treatment of cerebrospinal meningitis,and on isolating a bacillus of dysentery (Shigella dysenteriae). The bacterium Shigella flexneri was named in his honour. Carrel's experimental surgery and transplantation of tissues and organs whilst working in New York won him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912.
