Pellat electrodynamometer. Historical illustration of the electrodynamometer devised by French physicist Joseph Solange Henri Pellat (1850-1909). Recorded in the Carpentier catalogue of 1907,this device was capable of making extremely accurate measurements of electric currents. Standard masses are placed on the balance pan (right) to allow precision measurement of the international standard for the ampere, the unit of electric current. The Pellat method remained the standard way to measure the ampere for many years.
