Ice-formed gullies on Mars. Satellite image of the surface of Mars, showing gullies on a steep slope. In the winter this area is covered with a layer of carbon dioxide ice. In the spring the ice warms up and sublimates (going directly from a solid to a gas). As it does so it dislodges material on the slope, forming a gully. Imaged by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) satellite | |
