Alfred Lande (1888-1976),German-US theoretical physicist. During World War I Lande worked with the physicist Max Born at the Artillery Testing Commission. They undertook research on sound ranging, and also studied quantum theory. In 1918 they published a paper showing that electrons didn't orbit the atomic nucleus in the same plane,as Niels Bohr stated, but that the orbits were inclined towards one another. He is best known for the discovery of the Lande g-factor which relates the ratio of the magnetic moment of an atom to the angular momentum of the electrical current that generates it. This allowed the determination of the fine and superfine structure of the optical and X-ray spectra of atomic systems | |
