Gowen and Nason. US geneticists John Whittemore Gowan (left,1893-1967) and Alvin Nason (right,1919-1978). Gowan obtained his doctorate in 1917 from Columbia University. He worked at the Maine Agricultural Experimental Station (1917-1926) and the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (1926-1937). He was a professor at Iowa State College from 1937 to 1959,and professor at Colorado State University from 1964 to 1967. He studied disease resistance in genes and radiation effects. Nason authored or co-authored 'Textbook of Modern Biology' (1965) and 'Essentials of Modern Biology' (1968). Photographed in 1940
