Carl Erich Correns (1864-1933),German geneticist. Correns obtained his doctorate from the University of Munich in 1889. He then worked at several German universities before being appointed the first director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology in Berlin-Dahlem,Berlin,Germany. Correns is most famous for his rediscovery (independently and at the same time as three others) of Mendel's laws of heredity. Another key advance made in genetics by Correns was the discovery of cytoplasmic inheritance, the transmission of genes outside the cell nucleus. He studied this phenomenon in plants, and in 1909 identified variegated leaf colour as an example | |
