Light microscopy of the kidney showing several glomeruli and many renal tubules. Glomeruli are tufts of capillaries across which blood is selectively filtered as plasma that is taken up by the renal tubules. Each glomerulus and its associated renal tubule are known as a nephron of which there may be 1 million in each kidney. Nephrons reabsorb much of the glomerular filtrate and eliminate waste products as urine which passes out of the kidney in a duct system draining into the ureter.
