Light microscopy of the inner lining (mucosa) of the large bowel. The surface consists mainly of fluid-absorbing epithelial cells (blue) and larger mucus-secreting goblet cells (red) that together form long blind-ending tubular glands. These structures are called crypts of Lieberkuhn and they increase the surface area for absorption/secretion. Magnification x170 when narrow width printed at 10 cm | |
