Supernova remnant. X-ray space telescope image of the centre of the 3C58 supernova remnant. This region contains a rapidly spinning neutron star (pulsar) surrounded by a thick ring,or torus,of X-ray emission. The pulsar has also produced jets of X-rays that are blasting away from it to the left and right. These jets are responsible for creating the elaborate web of loops and swirls shown here. Imaged by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in low (red),medium (green) and high (blue) energy X-rays | |
