Wright Flyer aircraft engine. Underside view of a reconstruction of the motor used in 1903 by the Wright brothers in their pioneering aeroplane flights. US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright produced a series of Wright aircraft models, starting with the first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (1903). The engine powered a sprocket chain drive (left) that connected to the propellers. It was a 12-horsepower 4-cylinder aluminium water-cooled engine. The engine was built by their engineer,Charlie Taylor (1868-1956). It was designed and built within 6 weeks, and weighed 69 kilograms. Photographed on 10 January 1928 | |
