General Motors Firebird II Concept Car. General Motors 1956 Firebird II Concept Car on display at the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress,Detroit,Michigan,USA. This is the second of a trio of prototype cars designed by head of design Harley Earl (1893-1969) and built by General Motors between 1953 and 1959. They were inspired by fighter aircraft design and showcased the height of technology at the time. The exterior bodywork of this four-seater family car was made entirely of titanium. It also incorporated a sophisticated guidance system intended to be used with 'the highway of the future',where an electrical wire would be embedded into the road to send signals to help guide cars and avoid accidents.
