Siege of Paris balloon flight. 19th-century illustration of the record-breaking 'Ville de Orleans' balloon flight, one of the 66 balloons that escaped the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War (July 1870 to May 1871). Piloted by Paul Rolier and Leon Bezier, the balloon departed on 24 November 1870. It was blown off course and narrowly avoided ditching in the North Sea near a passing ship. The balloon eventually landed in Norway after a record-breaking journey of 3130 kilometres.
