Testing Space Shuttle tiles. High-temperature wind tunnel test being carried out in 1975 on the thermal protections tiles to be used on NASA's Space Shuttle. These tiles protect the shuttle from the intense heat experienced when the spacecraft re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. The Space Shuttles were spacecraft designed to be launched into low Earth orbit. Operated by NASA,the US space administration, they flew 135 missions from 1981 to 2011.
