Selman Waksman (1888-1973),US-Ukranian microbiologist in his laboratory. Waksman's main area of interest was soil microbes and he studied them and their role in decomposition extensively. This lead to the discovery of over 20 antibiotics,including streptomycin,the first antibiotic to be effective against the tuberculosis bacterium. Waksman was awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for this discovery. Photographed in 1953 | |
