Gale Crater,Mars Express colour-coded elevation model in perspective view. Gale Crater is 154 kilometres wide. This impact crater on Mars is where NASA's Curiosity rover landed on 6 August 2012,at far right in the purple region in an area called Aeolis Palus. The central mountain peak (Aeolis Mons) rises 5.5 kilometres above the crater floor below. The Digital Terrain Model (DTM) colour codes elevations: purple (lowest) through blue,green,yellow and red to white (highest).
