Cholera rehydration therapy. 20th-century photograph of emergency rehydration of cholera patients at a dispensary near Calcutta,India. Two nurses are attaching an intravenous drip containing rehydration fluids to a female patient lying on the floor. Cholera,a bacterial infection of the intestines, was often fatal before modern treatments were developed. The bacterium causing the disease (Vibrio cholerae) was identified in 1883. It spreads in infected water supplies and still kills thousands worldwide.
