Georg Meissner (1829-1905),German anatomist and physiologist. Meissner studied at the University of Gottingen,obtaining his medical degree in 1852. He worked as a professor,mostly at Gottingen from 1860 to 1901. It was in 1852 that he and Rudolf Wagner described mechanoreceptors in the skin now known as Meissner's corpuscles. Also named after him is Meissner's plexus,a group of nerves in the alimentary tract. His works include 'Beitrage zur Physiologie des Sehorgans' (1854,Contributions to the Physiology of the Eye).
