Max Wilms (1867-1918),German pathologist and surgeon. Wilms obtained his medical degree from the University of Bonn (1890) and then specialised in pathology and surgery. He was later a professor of surgery at Basel (1907) and Heidelberg (1910). His research included studies of renal disease (nephrology),and kidney tumours. He wrote on his findings in 'Die Mischgeschwülste der Niere' (1910),and co-authored a surgery textbook 'Lehrbuch der Chirurgie' (1908). Wilms also helped develop radiation therapy for the treatment of cancers. Wilms died during the First World War after becoming infected with diphtheria while operating on a prisoner-of-war | |
