Jean-Antoine Villemin (1827-1892),French physician. Villemin received military training and qualified as an army doctor. In 1863,he was appointed assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Val-de-Grace military medical school in Paris. Here,he carried out experiments on tuberculosis,inoculating animals with tuberculous material from human cases. He was able to prove that the disease was infectious. He was elected to the French National Academy of Medicine in 1874,and was the Academy's vice-president in 1891. He was posthumously awarded the 1893 Leconte Prize.
