Alfred Armand Louis Velpeau (1795-1867),French anatomist and surgeon. Of humble origins,he became the leading surgeon in Paris. He was an admired teacher and professor of clinical surgery at the university. He gained much of his knowledge as student and assistant to Pierre Bretonneau. He published over 340 titles on obstetrics, surgical anatomy, embryology, and operative medicine, many of which were translated into English. He also provided the first description of leukaemia. He considered the use of anaesthetics as absurd, and he disagreed with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Photographed by Pierre Petit (1831-1909) | |
